Why should you use Smart Mark for your revision?
Using personalised feedback in your revision can significantly boost your learning. This feedback is crucial for pinpointing areas where you can improve and helps you better understand how to answer questions accurately according to the syllabus, maximising your marks. In-class feedback from teachers is invaluable, but your teachers aren't on-call any time you need them. Smart Mark provides immediate, exam-specific feedback, and it marks your answer as an actual examiner would, allowing you to practice at home even when your teachers aren't available.
Smart Mark provides you with one-to-one feedback and support, enhancing your learning experience. Bloom's 2 sigma problem shows that students tutored one-to-one with mastery learning techniques did much better than those in traditional classrooms. In 1984, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom observed that average tutored students outperformed 98% of their peers. Bloom acknowledged that widespread one-to-one tutoring is impractical. He encouraged exploring combinations of variables—like learner traits, materials, home environments, and teacher influence—that could replicate the tutoring effect, much like Smart Mark.

How does Smart Mark work?
Smart Mark provides exam-specific feedback that has been rigorously tested and validated by educators. Unlike generic AI models, which requires careful prompting and often gives misleading feedback or inaccurate marks, Smart Mark consistently responds with precise feedback aligned with real exam standards, helping you avoid common pitfalls and misunderstandings.
Smart Mark separates questions into "Defined Mark' and 'Levelled Mark’. We have rolled this out across certain STEM, Business and English Literature courses for questions that most benefit from feedback being provided, with many more courses coming soon (see full list below).
Defined Mark User Experience:
‘Defined Mark’ questions are scored by awarding marks for each correct point, up to the total marks available for that question. This method focuses on specific, factual answers instead of assessing broader skills or essay structure, as ‘Levelled Mark’ does.
For example:
Levelled Mark User Experience:
When being marked by a real examiner, these responses require an examiner to decide if they are at a particular level (levels vary across subjects). Every extended response requires you to demonstrate particular skills. These skills will be different for each subject.
Smart Mark marks your answer and then determines what level each skill is at.
For example:
Smart Mark provides feedback on how to improve the skill so that you can move from a lower level to a higher level.

FAQs
How is Smart Mark better than Chat GPT?
Smart Mark’s feedback is tailored to a specific subject and exam board. We’ve trained Smart Mark to assess answers based on actual mark schemes, giving you the most accurate & specific feedback. Because of this, Smart Mark always provides feedback that accurately reflects how you will be marked in an exam, in a way that generic AI tools can’t. In order to get maximum marks, your response must align with what that specific exam board teaches. ChatGPT (and other generic AI tools) provide generic feedback that does not reliably align with exam-specific mark schemes, and so may give misleading or incorrect responses, which can be harmful to learning development. Other issues like hallucinations can be overly harsh or too generous. For example, they could give you positive feedback for an answer that generically answers the question but doesn’t use the specific language that that particular exam board is looking for, and so you wouldn’t actually get the marks in a real exam.
See more detail in our guide to using AI and ChatGPT (smartly) for revision.
