Frequently Asked Questions
Do you need to be fluent in French to take A Level?
No. But you do need a solid GCSE foundation. Most sixth forms ask for at least a grade 6. You don't need to be fluent at all, but you should be comfortable with core grammar and confident reading and listening in French. Fluency is something you build during the course.
What does the A Level French speaking exam involve?
The A Level French speaking exam is a structured discussion with an examiner, usually around 12–14 minutes. You'll present and discuss a topic of your choice, then have a conversation based on one of your A Level themes. It's not a roleplay. Preparation and practice make a real difference, and with the right revision resources, it's very manageable.
