Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between AP Physics 1 and AP Physics C?
AP Physics courses require math, but each has a different focus. Physics 1 is algebra-based. It covers Newtonian mechanics, waves, and fluids, and is designed as a true first course in physics. Physics C is calculus-based and goes a lot deeper into mechanics and electromagnetism. It's the harder course and much more highly regarded by colleges for credit. If you're planning to study engineering, physics, or a math-heavy major, Physics C is the better choice.
Do you need to take AP Physics 1 before AP Physics C?
There are no formal requirements to do so. But it's strongly recommended. Physics 1 builds the foundation that Physics C assumes you already have. Students who jump straight to Physics C without prior physics experience often find the pace very demanding.
