What is the nucleus?
In GCSE biology, the nucleus is defined as a subcellular structure that is surrounded by a membrane and that contains genetic material (DNA). The DNA within the nucleus controls the activities of the cell.
The nucleus is the site of many cell processes, such as protein synthesis and cell division. Cells that contain a nucleus, e.g. plant cells and animal cells, are known as eukaryotic cells.
