What is a gene?
In GCSE biology, a gene is defined as a short length of DNA, found on a chromosome, that codes for a specific protein. Genes can occur in different forms, known as alleles, and they determine the characteristics of organisms.
The coded information contained in genes determines the sequence of amino acids used to build proteins. Examples of proteins that are coded for by genes include enzymes, hormones and transport proteins such as haemoglobin.
