What is awe?

In GCSE Religious Studies, awe refers to a profound sense of wonder and reverence, often in response to an encounter with the divine or the vastness of creation. Many religious believers experience awe when contemplating God’s power, the beauty of nature, or sacred places, seeing these as evidence of a higher presence. This feeling can lead to deeper faith, worship, and a sense of humility.

In Christianity, for example, awe is associated with God’s majesty, as seen in Biblical stories like Moses and the burning bush. Similarly, in Islam, awe (or taqwa) reflects deep respect and awareness of Allah’s greatness.
