What is algebra?

In GCSE maths, algebra is the area which uses letters and symbols to represent numbers and help us visualise patterns. Algebra can be used in other areas of maths (for example, geometry and trigonometry) to help generalise rules and solve problems.

Topics in algebra include the following:

Algebraic expressions

Algebra is used to write expressions that can represent numbers

2n+1 represents an odd number when n is an integer

Equations

Algebra is used to form equations that can be solved to find unknown values

2n+1=5 can be solved to give n=2

Formulas

Algebra is used to write formulas that show the relationship between different variables

A=πr² is the formula for the area of a circle when the radius is r

Identities

Algebra can be used to show when two expressions are always true

an✕am=an+m is an identity that shows one of the laws of indices
