  • True of False?

To find the square of -13, you would type negative 13 squared into your calculator.

    False.

To find the square of -13, you would type open parentheses negative 13 close parentheses squared into your calculator.

Your calculator applies the order of operations so it will square before multiplying by -1 unless you use brackets.

  • True or False?

Typing fraction numerator 2 plus 5 over denominator 3 minus 1 end fractioninto a calculator is the same as 2 plus 5 divided by 3 minus 1.

    False.

Typing fraction numerator 2 plus 5 over denominator 3 minus 1 end fractioninto a calculator is not the same as 2 plus 5 divided by 3 minus 1.

Imagine invisible brackets around the numerator and denominator, giving open parentheses 2 plus 5 close parentheses divided by open parentheses 3 minus 1 close parentheses.

  • How do you use a calculator to find the cube root of a number?

To find the cube root of a number on a calculator, find the button that looks like cube root of blank.

Be careful, this is different to typing 3 followed by the square root button, 3 square root of blank end root.

  • What does the Ans button on your calculator do?

The Ans button recalls the last answer the calculator calculated.

If you have used your calculator to work out a long calculation and then want to square the answer, you can just type Ans2.

  • True or False?

You should round your answer each time you use your calculator to do a series of calculations in your working.

    False.

You should only round your answer at the very end of your working, otherwise you may get rounding errors.

You can show you are not rounding by putting three dots at the end of a number.

    For example:

sin(20)=0.3420... then 15×0.3420... means you typed in 15×Ans.

  • If your calculator has given you an exact answer (e.g. 2 pi comma space square root of 3 comma space 2 over 7), how do you change it to a decimal?

To change an exact answer into a decimal, press the straight S left right double arrow straight D button.

On some calculators, this might be labelled differently such as straight F left right double arrow straight D.
