  • What is a medicinal drug?

A medicinal drug is a substance taken into the body that affects chemical processes within the body.

  • What are antibiotics?

Antibiotics are medicinal drugs used in the treatment of bacterial infection.

  • What is antibiotic resistance?

Antibiotic resistance occurs when bacteria survive exposure to antibiotics that would normally kill them or inhibit their growth.

  • True or False?

    Antibiotics can kill viruses.

    False.

Antibiotics do not destroy viruses, so can only be used to treat bacterial infection.

  • True or False?

There is no relationship between the extent of antibiotic use and the development of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria. (Extended Tier Only)

    False.

Antibiotic use can increase the probability that a resistant population of bacteria will arise because:

    • the antibiotics kill any non-resistant individuals

    • the randomly occurring alleles that code for resistance become highly advantageous

    • the resistance alleles are more likely to spread to other individuals

This means that using antibiotics only when needed can limit antibiotic resistance.

  • True or False?

MRSA is an antibiotic resistant strain of bacteria. (Extended Tier Only)

    True.

MRSA stands for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.
