  • Define the term respiration.

Respiration is a chemical reaction that takes place in living cells. It releases energy from glucose.

  • How do living organisms use the energy released during respiration?

Living organisms use the energy released during respiration in many ways, including:

    • muscle contraction

    • protein synthesis

    • cell division

    • active transport

    • growth

    • nerve impulse transmission

    • maintaining a constant body temperature

  • In an investigation into the effect of temperature on respiration in yeast, which variables would need to be controlled?

Variables that would need to be controlled in an investigation into the effect of temperature on respiration in yeast include:

    • volume of yeast suspension

    • number of cells present in the yeast suspension

    • type of sugar provided

    • concentration of sugar solution

    • pH

    • availability of oxygen

    (Avoid saying 'amount')

  • How would a temperature increase affect the rate of respiration in yeast cells?

An increase in temperature would cause an increase in the rate of respiration in yeast cells.

This trend would continue until around 40°C, above which the rate of respiration would slow down due to denaturing enzymes.

  • Define the term aerobic respiration.

Aerobic respiration is a cellular reaction that uses oxygen to break down nutrients in order to release energy.

  • What is the word equation for aerobic respiration?

The word equation for aerobic respiration is:

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water

  • What are the reactants in aerobic respiration?

The reactants in aerobic respiration are glucose and oxygen.

  • What is the balanced chemical equation for aerobic respiration? (Extended Tier Only)

The balanced chemical equation for aerobic respiration is:

    C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O

  • What is anaerobic respiration?

Anaerobic respiration is the chemical reaction in cells that breaks down nutrient molecules to release energy in the absence of oxygen.

  • True or False?

Anaerobic respiration releases slightly less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration.

    False.

Anaerobic respiration releases much less energy per glucose molecule than aerobic respiration.

  • What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast?

The word equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast is:

glucose → alcohol + carbon dioxide

  • What is the balanced chemical equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast? (Extended Tier Only)

The balanced chemical equation for anaerobic respiration in yeast is:

    C6H12O6 → 2C2H5OH + 2CO2

  • What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles?

The word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscles is:

    glucose → lactic acid

  • What is the oxygen debt? (Extended Tier Only)

The oxygen debt is the oxygen required to remove the build up of lactic acid in muscle cells after anaerobic respiration.

  • How does the body deal with the oxygen debt after exercise? (Extended Tier Only)

The body deals with the oxygen debt in several ways:

    • heart rate remains high so that lactic acid is transported quickly from the muscles to the liver

    • lactic acid is used in aerobic respiration in the cells of the liver

    • breathing rate remains high to supply enough oxygen for aerobic respiration
