Ladettes - GCSE Sociology Definition

Reviewed by: Raj Bonsor

'Ladettes' is a term used in sociology to describe a cultural phenomenon, primarily observed in the UK since the 1990s, characterised by young women adopting behaviours traditionally associated with young men, or 'lads.' This includes drinking heavily, engaging in rowdy or boisterous behaviour, and displaying a brash or bold attitude.

The emergence of ladette culture challenges traditional gender norms by blurring the lines of acceptable behaviour for women and is often discussed in GCSE Sociology to explore themes of gender roles, identity, and the impact of media representations on societal expectations.
