Identity - GCSE Sociology Definition

Reviewed by: Raj Bonsor

In GCSE Sociology, 'identity' refers to the way individuals and groups perceive and express themselves, which is shaped by personal characteristics as well as social influences. It encompasses aspects such as gender, ethnicity, nationality, social class, and religion, which all contribute to the unique sense of self a person develops.

Identity is not a static concept; it can change over time and context, influenced by broader societal structures and interactions with others. Understanding identity helps students analyse how people relate within different social groups and how these relationships affect behaviour and perspectives within society.
