Domestic Abuse - GCSE Sociology Definition

Reviewed by: Raj Bonsor

Domestic abuse refers to any form of abusive behaviour within an intimate or family relationship where one person seeks to exert power and control over another. This can include physical violence, emotional manipulation, psychological intimidation, sexual abuse, or financial control. It is not limited to any specific gender, age, or class and can occur in any household setting.

Understanding domestic abuse is crucial in GCSE Sociology, as it highlights issues of power dynamics, social roles, and inequalities within the family structure, encouraging students to critically examine societal norms and their impact on personal relationships.
