Delinquent - GCSE Sociology Definition

Reviewed by: Raj Bonsor

Published

In the context of GCSE Sociology, 'delinquent' refers to an individual, usually a young person or juvenile, who engages in behaviours that violate legal or social norms. Delinquent acts can include a range of activities such as vandalism, theft, or truancy and are often seen as actions that disrupt the social order.

In studying delinquency, sociologists examine the causes behind such behaviours, considering factors like family background, peer influence, and social environment. Understanding delinquency is essential for exploring wider issues of crime and deviance within society, as well as the ways in which societies respond to and attempt to prevent such behaviours.
