Banding - GCSE Sociology Definition

Reviewed by: Raj Bonsor

In GCSE Sociology, 'banding' refers to the practice of grouping students into broad ability bands or sets, often within a school or subject, based on their perceived academic performance. This system is intended to tailor teaching methods to different ability levels, enabling teachers to address the specific needs of each group more effectively.

The idea is to help students achieve optimal learning by providing the appropriate level of challenge and support. However, banding has sparked debates concerning educational equality, as critics argue it can perpetuate social inequalities and limit opportunities for students placed in lower bands.
