Approximate - GCSE Maths Definition

In GCSE Maths, 'approximate' refers to a value or result that is close to, but not exactly equal to, the true value. It involves using estimation or rounding to simplify complex numbers or calculations, making them easier to work with while retaining a reasonable level of accuracy. Approximations are often used when dealing with irrational numbers, measurements, or when a high degree of precision is unnecessary. For example, the number π (pi) is often approximated as 3.14 or 22/7 to make calculations straightforward. Understanding how to approximate effectively is a key skill in Maths, helping students to check their work and solve problems more efficiently.
