Driver - GCSE Computer Science Definition

In the context of GCSE Computer Science, a 'driver' is a specialised software program that allows a computer's operating system to communicate with hardware devices. It acts as a translator between the operating system and the hardware, enabling them to understand each other. When you connect a new device, like a printer or a graphics card, the driver provides the necessary instructions so the computer can utilise the device's features effectively. Without the appropriate drivers, the hardware might not function correctly or at all, making them essential for seamless interaction between the system's software and hardware components.
