Recycling - GCSE Chemistry Definition

Recycling is the process of collecting and reusing materials that would otherwise be thrown away as waste. It helps to reduce landfill, save energy, and conserve natural resources.
In GCSE Chemistry, recycling often involves metals and polymers. Metals like aluminium can be melted and reused, saving up to 95% of the energy compared to making new metal from ore.
Polymers (plastics) can be more difficult to recycle. Some are melted and remoulded, while others are chemically broken down into monomers. Recycling polymers helps reduce plastic pollution and the use of crude oil, which is a finite resource.
Recycling shows how chemical processes can support sustainability and reduce the environmental impact of modern materials.
