Answering 3-Mark Questions (AQA GCSE Sociology)
Revision Note
How do I answer an AQA GCSE Sociology 3-mark question?
3-mark questions appear as short answer questions in Paper 1 and 2 and they test your AO1 skills
There will be four 3-mark questions in each paper:
Question 3 and 4 in Section A
Question 14 and 15 in Section B
These questions generally assess your knowledge and understanding of key terms and concepts
The questions will ask you to describe or identify and describe one factor, e.g.
Describe one example of a...
Describe one feature of...
Identify and describe one consequence of...
Identify and describe one way in which...
Worked Example
Here is an example of a 'describe' 3-mark question:
Q. Describe one example of a commune.
[3 marks]
Model answer:
Define the key term/concept:
A commune consists of a group of people who share living accommodation, ownership of property and the domestic division of labour
Provide an explanation and an example:
The members value equality and cooperation between each other, for example, those living in an Israeli kibbutz
Level 3 response: 3 marks
Marking Commentary:
This response is in the top band (Level 3) because it shows good knowledge and understanding of a commune. The definition is well explained ('share living accommodation...members value equality') and is supported with an example ('Israeli kibbutz'). There are clear links between concepts (domestic division of labour) and key terms (commune, kibbutz).
Worked Example
Here is an example of an 'identify and describe' 3-mark question:
Q. Identify and describe one consequence of divorce for family members.
[3 marks]
Model answer:
Identify the consequence:
One consequence of divorce is financial hardship [1 mark]
Provide an explanation and an example:
Adults will have to manage with less money coming in. For example, once the family home is sold, the mother may have to downsize to a rental property due to the drop in household income [2 marks]
Level 3 response: 3 marks
Commentary:
This response is in the top band (Level 3) because it shows good knowledge and understanding of one consequence of divorce. The consequence is well explained ('less money coming in') and is supported with an example ('mother may have to downsize'). There are clear links between concepts (divorce) and key terms (income).
Examiner Tips and Tricks
To achieve full marks:
Give a detailed answer that includes a well-supported explanation and a relevant example when answering a 'describe' question
Examiners encourage you to include contemporary examples
Link your answer to a researcher and/or an approach where possible
Take time to consider your response and choose only one factor when answering an 'identify and describe' question
Both types of 3-mark questions can be structured in the same way.
