How do I answer an AQA GCSE Sociology 1-mark question?

  • 1-mark questions appear as multiple choice questions (MCQs) in Paper 1 and 2 and they test your AO1 skills

  • There will be four MCQs in each paper:

    • Questions 1 and 2 in Section A

    • Questions 12 and 13 in Section B

  • The MCQs generally test your knowledge of key terms and concepts, so it is important to learn and revise all of the specialist language you will come across in the entire course

Examples

Multiple-choice question about family types with options: A) Beanpole family, B) Blended family, C) Empty nest family, D) Extended family.
MCQ testing knowledge of key terms
Multiple-choice question asks which sociological perspective focuses on patriarchy and gender; options are Feminist, Functionalist, Marxist, and New Right.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

Ensure that you know how to select your answer and how to indicate if you have changed your mind.

The instructions below appear at the beginning of Section A in both Paper 1 and Paper 2; it is important to read them!

Instructions for filling multiple-choice answers: fill circle for answer, cross to change, ring for previously crossed-out answers. Correct and wrong methods shown.
Instructions for completing MCQs

Examiners often report that students indicate their choice of response incorrectly, especially when they change their mind and want to amend their choices.

Examiner Tips and Tricks

If you don't know the answer:

  • Eliminate obviously incorrect options to narrow down your choices

  • Make an educated guess - never leave a multiple choice question unanswered

  • Trust your instincts! Your first answer is often correct. Only change it if you're absolutely certain it's wrong

You will have around one minute to answer each MCQ, so if you encounter a tough question, put a circle around the question number and come back to it later if you have time.
