Judaism & the Design Argument (Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies B) : Revision Note
What is the Design Argument for the existence of the Almighty?
The Design Argument (also known as the teleological argument) is one of the classical arguments put forward to support the existence of God
It suggests that the world’s order, complexity, and purpose point to the existence of an intelligent designer
The design argument says that because everything in the universe is so intricately made, it must have been created by God, and therefore God exists
The argument is based on the observation that the universe appears to be ordered, structured, and finely tuned to support life
For example, the Earth’s perfect distance from the sun, the laws of physics, and the complexity of living organisms all suggest that the universe is designed for a purpose
Everything in nature, from the movement of planets to the structure of DNA, seems to have been "designed" for a specific function, which many people believe points to a designer God

The Design Argument
Design Argument and Judaism
The Design Argument in Judaism suggests that the order, complexity, and beauty of the universe point to a purposeful creator, God
Jews believe the world reflects divine wisdom and intention, as seen in the way that natural laws occur
In Judaism, the natural world, with its balance and harmony, suggests an intelligent designer rather than random chance
The universe is set up perfectly for life, indicating a creator
The Torah, especially Genesis, describes a God that creates the world purposefully
Jewish philosophers like Maimonides argued that the complexity of the universe shows evidence of God’s design
What does the Design Argument show about the nature of the Almighty?
The Design Argument in Judaism shows that the nature of the Almighty is omnipotent, intelligent, purposeful, and omnibenevolent
The Design Argument highlights God’s immense power because a creator must possess extraordinary strength and ability to create the universe
The power of God is central in Jewish teachings and is seen in the creation story in Genesis, where God simply speaks the world into existence
The universe’s complexity shows that God is an intelligent creator, designing everything with a clear plan
This idea is rooted in the teachings of the Torah, which describe God as the Creator who made the world with wisdom
The book of Proverbs (3:19) says:
‘The Lord by wisdom founded the earth’ (Proverbs (3:19)
The order found in nature suggests that God’s creation has meaning rather than being the result of chance
The very act of creation in Genesis reflects a step-by-step intentional and purposeful creation
The way the world is set up to support life reflects God’s care and love for his creation, especially human beings
The idea of a caring God is reflected in the covenant between God and the Jewish people
What are humanist and atheist views on the Design Argument?
Humanists believe that the universe's order and complexity can be explained by natural processes, such as evolution and the laws of physics
They argue that humans can find meaning and purpose in life through reason, ethics, and human achievement, rather than relying on the idea of a divine designer
For humanists, the Design Argument does not prove the existence of God, as they believe life and the universe are not the result of a divine plan but have naturally occurred
Atheists also reject the Design Argument because they believe the universe’s complexity can be explained by scientific theories like the Big Bang and evolution
They argue that the appearance of design is an illusion, and although things may look designed, they are the result of natural, random processes
Atheists believe there is no need for a God to explain the existence or order of the universe, as science offers better explanations without involving a divine being
What are Jewish responses to Humanist and Atheist views on the Design Argument?
Jews would reject both Humanist and Atheist views regarding the design of the universe
Most Jews accept the findings of science, such as evolution and the Big Bang, but believe that these natural processes were created and are sustained by God
They might say that God set the laws of nature in motion and continues to work through them
For many Jews, science and faith do not conflict, rather, they see science as revealing the methods God uses to sustain and order the world
Jews believe that the universe was created with a purpose, and its order is a reflection of God's qualities and his continued involvement in their lives
Worked Example
Explain two ways the design argument may show that the Almighty exists
(4)
Answer
The world appears to have balance and harmony (1), and Jews believe this is because God has created the world in an ordered way to support life (1)
The natural world also seems to be intricate and complex (1), which suggests an intelligent designer rather than random chance, and this designer is the Almighty (1)
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Try to use Jewish texts as a reference to support your responses (for example, Genesis, Psalms, Proverbs)
An example of this would be, Psalm 19:1 (‘The heavens declare the glory of God’) which supports the idea that the natural world reflects God’s glory and wisdom
