Qualitative Data

  • Qualitative data is non-numerical; it cannot be counted or expressed as a number and it involves descriptions

  • Examples of qualitative data include:

    • A participant's description of their performance

    • An observer's opinion on the quality of a team's play

  • Qualitative data is often subjective, meaning that it is dependent on the feelings and opinions of individuals

    • This differs from quantitative data which deals with objective facts

Methods for Collecting Qualitative Data

  • Qualitative data can be collected by carrying out:

    • Interviews

      • Speaking to participants after a test or a sporting event allows them to share their opinion of their performance

    • Observations

      • An observer watching an activity can record thoughts on the quality of a performance
