Interpretation, Analysis & Evaluation

What is issue evaluation?

  • Issue evaluation is all about analysing and interpreting information and is found in paper 3

  • The paper includes a range of multiple choice, short open and extended writing questions

  • Section D offers a choice of three decisions assessed by a 12 mark extended writing question

    • It examines critical thinking and problem solving

    • The total marks for this section are 16 (25%)

  • The 'issue' is drawn from topics 7, 8 and 9

  • It is important to study all the information carefully, work out its meaning and how it connects

Past 'issues'

  • Past issues have included:

    • Palm oil industry in Indonesia

    • Oil production in Norway

    • Energy sources

    • Challenge of deforestation in Cambodia

    • Tar sands in Alberta

  • The questions examine:

    • Geographical skills and application of knowledge

    • Interpretation and analysis of the materials provided

    • It does not matter which option you choose: what matters is how your answer is justified

    • But your answer must be supported with evidence from the booklet and your own knowledge
