Question 4 overview
Question 4 will be based on certain lines from Text 2. You will be asked to identify one thing from the extract, and you are being tested on your ability to scan a piece of text quickly and identify explicit or implicit information.
It is important that you do not use anything outside of the lines specified in the question, as you will not receive the mark if you do. You can use your own words or direct quotations from the text to answer the question, but you should avoid just copying out whole lines of the text.
This question is designed to ease you into the exam. It is only worth 1 mark, and you should spend no more than five minutes on both this and Question 5.
Examiner Tips and Tricks
To answer this question quickly, read the question carefully first and then go to the specified lines of Text 2. You do not have to read the whole of Text 2 before answering this question.
How to answer Question 4
Let’s look at Question 4 from the November 2022 exam (you can find the whole of Text 2 here):
The style of Question 4 is always the same, and it is most important that you identify what the focus of the question is.
In order to achieve 1 mark for this question, you should:
Read the question carefully and highlight its focus (what you are being asked to identify)
Mark the lines specified in Text 2
Scan the lines and highlight the exact words or phrases that answer the question
For example:
A crew based in the Antarctic for Dynasties, the new BBC One series, found the birds trapped in a gully as a storm raged around them. After being moved to tears by the plight of one chick that died as it tried to get out of the ravine, the team dug a ramp in the snow that allowed the surviving penguins to walk to safety. |
You only need to identify one action taken by the camera crew. You could write your answer like this:
The team dug a ramp in the snow ✅
