Properties of Metals (WJEC GCSE Chemistry): Revision Note
Properties of Metals
Different metals have different properties and this will influence how they are used
For example, aluminium has a low density, is a good conductor and is strong, so makes it ideal to be used as overhead power cables
Properties and uses of common metals
Metal | Property | Use |
---|---|---|
Steel | Hard and strong | Buildings, reinforced concrete, cars, tools |
Aluminium | Strong Low density Good conductor of heat and electricity, Resistant to corrosion | Aeroplane parts, cans, window frames, foils, overhead power cables |
Copper | Very good conductor of heat and electricity Malleable and ductile Attractive colour and lustre | Wiring, pipes, motors |
Titanium | Hard and strong Low density Resistant to corrosion High melting point | Medical industry (surgical instruments, joint replacements), spacecraft, sports equipment |
Reinforced concrete block with steel rods

Steel rods are used to reinforce concrete to increase strength in buildings
Examiner Tips and Tricks
Make sure you can explain why a substance is used for a particular use.
For example, copper is used in electrical wiring because it is a good conductor of electricity.
