Jameel has been running his business JAA Toys for two years. The toys have become popular and the business is now receiving larger orders from many toy shops. To help meet this increasing demand Jameel has rented a small business workshop, purchased more machinery and plans to recruit staff.

Jameel wants to recruit four people; three to make the toys and one for administration. He has decided that he will not recruit a manager because he wants to keep control over the production of the toys. Instead he will manage the employees himself and communicate his new designs to staff. This means his business will have a flat organisational structure. Jameel will spend a lot of his time visiting toy shops in the North of England to get orders. He also has plans to visit exhibitions to gain ideas for new designs.

Jameel is concerned about rising costs due to the expansion, so he wants to keep the cost of wages down. There are some weeks when production will be low because there are very few orders. The business will be very busy at other times, such as before Christmas. Jameel is aware he needs to recruit skilled production staff to make high-quality toys to his unique designs. This is important to maintain the unique selling point (USP) of JAA Toys.

Zephyr's T-shirts has a good reputation for embroidering polo shirts with personalised logos with an exceptionally fast delivery time. Customers upload an image of the logo, and Zephyr's T-shirts aim to deliver the finished shirts within 3 working days. This is a highly competitive market, with many suppliers offering a similar product, albeit with an average 4-day lead time.

Staff must work at a very fast pace and often do not have breaks, working extra hours in order to complete their assigned daily workload. They often spend an hour or more each day repairing the sewing machines that are old and inefficient.

Zephyr has noticed an increase in complaints and returned polo shirts that do not conform to the high quality of workmanship stated on the website.

Zephyr has identified two options available to improve the quality of polo shirts sold:

Last Course Patisserie is considering setting up its own small chain of retail outlets to sell directly to customers in the Devon area or whether to supply their products to third party retail outlets such as bakery chains and coffee shops.

Last Course Patisserie is aware its products contain many allergens and knows it must comply with consumer law to display the ingredients of the products on sale. As the products are made to order, the list of ingredients can change frequently and need careful monitoring. Staff must be highly trained to keep up with the changing product range. During staff breaks and holidays, accurate knowledge hand-over to new staff is crucial for consumer safety. The management are concerned that third-party retailers may not have the same attention to detail and will not train their staff to a high level on their products.

In order to expand and to comply with consumer law, Last Course Patisserie has two options:
