Sense Organs (WJEC GCSE Biology)
Revision Note
Sense Organs
Sense organs are groups of receptor cells which respond to specific stimuli such as light, sound, touch, temperature and chemicals (e.g. smell and taste)
Receptor cells are groups of specialised cells
They detect a change in the environment and stimulate electrical impulses in response
Sense organs relay the information from receptor cells as electrical impulses along neurones to the central nervous system
Examples of sense organs table
Sense organ | Sensitive to: | Sense |
---|---|---|
Skin | Pressure, temperature changes and pain | Touch and temperature |
Tongue | Chemicals in food and drink | Taste |
Nose | Chemicals in the air | Smell |
Ear | Sound and movement | Hearing Balance |
