What is the structure of Paper 1?

Overview

• Paper 1 consists of two sections with questions that may relate to any part of the syllabus

  • This paper is used for both the SL and HL exam. This means it cannot contain any higher-level only material

• Questions are based on an extended case study, issued to students on the day of the exam

• Three months prior to the exam, a pre-released statement is made available

  • This statement provides a broad topic, a list of key terminology, and the first five paragraphs of the case study

  • Students are advised to spend a maximum of five hours researching the topic and familiarising themselves with the case study and terminology

Section A

• This section contains a series of structured questions based on the case study

  • Define questions worth 2 marks

  • Explain questions worth 2 or 4 marks

  • Describe questions worth 4 marks

• There is a total of 20 marks available for this section

• You must answer all questions

Section B

• This section contains a choice of two discuss questions

  • You need to answer one of these

  • There is a total of 10 marks available for this section

Exam information

• The exam duration is 1 hour 30 minutes

• The total number of marks available is 30

• This paper accounts for 25% of the final grade
