The Caribbean monk seals (Neomonachus tropicalis) was a species of seal that existed in large populations for hundreds of years around gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean.

The last confirmed sighting of the Caribbean monk seals was in 1952 and since then it has been declared to be extinct.

(i)

State the type of extinction that occurred to the Caribbean monk seal.

[1]
(ii)
Explain three specific reasons why the Caribbean monk seal went extinct.

In a similar location to the Caribbean monk seal but on the other side of Mexico in the Gulf of California lives a small species of porpoise called the vaquita (Phocoena sinus).

Similarly to the monk seal, the numbers of vaquita have been gradually declining over the years. The graph below shows the numbers of vaquita from 1997 to 2018.

Describe the decline the numbers of vaquita over time.

The number of vaquita declined from 567 total individuals in 1997 to 245 individuals in 2008, then the number of vaquita declined from 30 total individuals in 2016 to 19 individuals in 2018.

Calculate the rate of decline in vaquita numbers:

(i)

From 1997 to 2008.

[2]
(ii)

From 2016 to 2018.

(iii)

From 1997 to 2018.

The vaquita have been described as 'critically endangered' by the ICUN, an organisation that has been monitoring the decline of the species.

(i)

Explain the process that species must go through in order to be considered a priority for conservation.

[2]

(ii)
Suggest three potential conservation strategies that could be used to help the vaquita species.

It is believed by many scientists that there are currently more species alive on Earth today than at any time in the past.

Suggest two sources of evidence that scientists can use to support their claim.

The graph below shows how the number of species on Earth has changed over the last 400 million years.

historic-extinction-data

Over the last 450 million years there have been five historic mass extinctions.

(i)

The data on the graph starts after the second mass extinction, state the date of the third mass extinction.

[1]

(ii)

Suggest the date of the mass extinction event that caused the extinction of the dinosaurs.

The data in the graph in part (b) is likely to be inaccurate due to the complexity of identifying the true number of species that currently exist.

(i)

There are currently around 1.3 million known species, which is estimated to be approximately 15% of the true number of species on Earth.

Calculate the estimated true number of species on Earth.

[1]

(ii)

Taxonomists often disagree with how species are classified as it is a highly subjective process.

Explain two ways taxonomists might choose to classify species that are in conflict with each other.

Farmers can plant their crops at different times throughout the year. Traditionally crops were planted in April and harvested in September. However, in modern times farmers have switched to planting their crops in September and harvesting in June/July.

Scientists decided to investigate the effect that the change in planting time had on the number of species of farmland birds over 10 years. The scientists counted the number of farmland birds found within a 1km radius of farm X that plants its crops in April, and within a 1km radius of farm Y that plants its crops in September.

The graph below shows the data they collected.

In recent years, farmers have merged grazing fields together by removing hedgerows. This has resulted in a decline in the biodiversity of farmland birds. Explain why.
