Immigration Policies
Governments establish immigration policies that make it easier or harder for people to immigrate to their territory
Policies encouraging migration include:
guest worker policies
Countries may encourage migration to increase their workforce
family reunification policies
Policies discouraging migration include:
establishing quotas
refusing to accept refugees
establishing educational or skills requirements for entry
Countries may discourage migration to maintain cultural homogeneity
Examiner Tips and Tricks
The AP Exam will often ask you to apply your knowledge of guest workers to specific real-world scenarios. For example, Gulf countries, such as the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait, host significant guest worker populations from South and Southeast Asia. In addition, significant numbers of Turkish immigrants migrated to Germany in the 1970s and 1980s to fill industrial jobs.
