Mechanisms of Transport

• A variety of processes allow for the movement of ions and other molecules across membranes

• This allows cells to regulate what goes in and out depending on their requirements

• Transport mechanisms include:

  • Passive transport (covered in 2.6 Membrane transport) :

    • Diffusion

    • Facilitated diffusion

    • Osmosis

  • Active transport (covered in 2.6 Membrane transport) :

    • Endocytosis and exocytosis
