How Do I Answer an Edexcel A-Level Economics Multiple Choice Question (MCQ)?

  • One-mark MCQs appear in Papers 1 and 2 only

  • There are five MCQs in Section A of each paper

Example

Multiple-choice question on Esure's 2016 demerger with GoCompare; correct answer, marked with an X, is C: focus more on its core business.
  • Identify the key concept (e.g. "demerger") and focus on the scenario provided

  • Carefully read the options and break down each option logically:

    • Ask yourself how each option relates to the key concept

    • Eliminate those that clearly do not apply

  • Use your knowledge of economic theory

  • Apply your knowledge to match the scenario with the most likely answer

    • In the example above, a demerger usually helps firms focus on core business activities

  • Choose and verify your answer

    • Select the best option and double-check it against both the context and the question

Examiner Tips and Tricks

  • Spend no more than one minute per question

  • Move on if you are unsure and revisit the question later
